A mobile petting zoo is the easiest way to entertain a wide age range, but a few small preparations make the difference between chaos and calm.
Where to put the pen
Shade first, flat ground second. Grass, gravel, a driveway or a garage all work. Indoors we bring a tarp, so the floor stays clean.
Set two ground rules with the kids
- Open, flat hands - animals sniff before they are petted.
- Sit or kneel to hold the bunnies, never stand.
- One child at a time with the smaller animals; the rest wait in a line that keeps moving.
Hygiene
Have hand sanitizer or a hose and soap at the exit of the pen and route kids past it before food is served. Keep the snack table away from the animals.
Which animals win the day
Bunnies are the toddler favorites. Goats and pigs get the biggest laughs from older kids.
